ATTACHMENT 5: CHALLENGING SITUATIONS
How do we respond and stay in the moment
when challenging situations arise?
Feelings and emotions are running high.
x Reflection, reflection, reflection: (Be comfortable with emotion. Stay in the moment
and reflect participants own language as closely as possible. It’s very empowering
for the participant to have their feelings acknowledged in this way.)
x Check-in on emotion: The discussion is getting pretty emotional. You feel very
passionate about. . . Would it be helpful to take a break for a few minutes? Or is it
okay to continue?
Some of the participants are quiet and not participating.
x Process check-in: A number of people haven’t had the opportunity to contribute yet.
Would it be helpful to hear some other perspective?
x Check-in with individual: You haven’t had an opportunity to speak, Sue. Would you
like to share your thoughts now, or if you’re not ready and would like to wait, that’s
OK too. (Choice is important so we’re not putting anyone on the spot).
One of the participants is taking over the discussion.
x Process observation and check-in: You’ve made a number of points for the group’s
consideration, Bob. Would it be helpful to hear some other perspectives at this time?
It’s my job as facilitator to make sure everyone has an opportunity to participate. Do
others have another point of view on the subject of. . .
One participant is silent and shaking their head at most everything that is being said.
x Non-verbal reflection and check-in: I see you shaking your head, Angeles. It looks
like you might feel strongly about the discussion.
