Steps Action(s)
Church Facility vs. Just something to think about. It’s simply a fact that some will be
Secular Location uncomfortable going to an event in a church with which they’re
not familiar. Several of our programs were based out of M&SP
and some of our other partners were churches – we needed to take
advantage of their facilities and other resources. We hosted BC-7
at Patuxent High School. We hosted many events in years past in
the public library, community college and local university. If they
are available and willing to help, their facilities may be ideally
suited.
Panelists or Presenters?
The usual approach for large community conversations is to provide a panel of experts who
share information and experience from differing views or about different aspects of the
issue. Then there is often time for questions and/or comments from audience members.
Prior Big Conversations at Middleham and St. Peter’s followed this model. Other initiatives
in the community had focused more upon guest presenters to present information followed
by facilitated small group conversations. This is the model we chose for the Big
Conversations VI and VII.

Choosing Presenters It is important to invite presenters who are knowledgeable
