After nearly a decade of doing this work, organizers were now seeing a willingness of
community members to share their personal experience of race in Southern Maryland.
There were both a readiness and a desire to have meaningful conversations and continue
doing the work on a much deeper level to heal racial divides.
The Big Conversation VI on Dismantling Racism and Privilege
in Southern Maryland
A number of parishioners from Middleham and St. Peter’s Parish formed the core of the Big
Conversation planning committee: Diane Davies (Chair of the committee), Hugh Davies,
Dr. Nancy Briggs, John Wilson, and Rev. David Deaderick, Rev. Sarah Akes-Cardwell,
Rev. David Showers and Rev. Skip Steiner.
Although M&SP members had developed five previous Big Conversation topics in years
prior (Immigration, Health care, Veterans, Inequity and Equity, Gun Violence), the current
planning committee did not want to jump into the Big Conversation on Dismantling Racism
