with students of color. I say “she” because the lack of male teachers is a whole other
discussion.
6. I was not surprised by what was said. All gave thoughtful answers. I think the moderator
went a little over the top with praise for the youth (not a lot of praise for the adults) If the
youth were not up to the task they would not have been there.
7. A bit too much professional education jargon.
Group 272B
1. Adults were too guarded. If you can’t have a frank conversation it is hard to make progress
toward solutions.
2. Major differences among the speakers as to what the problems were and how to handle it.
3. Young folks (students) are not being heard.
4. Does everyone agree that equity is a problem?
5. Cultural training needed for students and teachers
6. Problem between state, county, BOE communicating and setting standards.
7. Better historical education for teachers and students.
8. I was impressed with the data concerning racial bias and also the history behind it in the
school system.
9. I also liked the fact that CCPS realizes the need for equity in the school system.
10. Where are the County commissioners for both counties on this issue? I do not see any of
them here today.
11. I felt that it was interesting. As to what each panelist had to say. Several responses mirrored
my thoughts on what I would have answered to the question that was asked.
12. Appreciated the viewpoints from the kids.
13. I did not know about the equity and diversity directives of the past few years.
14. I love it!
15. Community turn out was large- people are passionate and interested in helping to build a
better system.
16. I really enjoyed the young men’s answers. They were straight forward and honest.
17. I liked how the lady from St. Mary’s County spoke about how things were and that they let
the ball drop and did not follow through.
Group 275A
1. They were very informative. I was not aware that there was a Statewide initiative for equity
and that CCPS was the third system to become involved in it.
2. I felt a lot of the things that were said by my peers were accurate, I also enjoyed hearing the
things the adults had to say.
3. We have come far, but have far to go.
4. Very informative.
5. Overall, I thought it was a good kick off to set the stage for the issues. One thing is that there
was a commonality of viewpoints which did not include counter opinions.
6. I am glad that the issue of racism has been brought to the table as a topic of discussion.
7. That there are policies in place to address equity.
8. Varied, different, too scripted, young guys move from the heart.
9. Thoughtful but not dealing with the cultural/parental issues outside the school.
