BYLAWS OF THE BIG CONVERSATION PARTNERS IN DISMANTLING
RACISM AND PRIVILEGE IN SOUTHERN MARYLAND
I. INTRODUCTION
The Big Conversation Partners in Dismantling Racism and Privilege in Southern
Maryland (BCPDRP) is a coalition of community organizations that work to
improve understanding and appreciation of racial, ethnic, cultural and historic
differences in order to create a more Beloved Community in Southern Maryland.
Concept for a Big Conversation:
• Civil discourse that contrasts with contentious conversation and social
media
• Engagement with the topic while modeling HOW to discuss
• Learning as the objective and conversation as a catalyst for action
• Reduction of fear and misinformation through encouragement of listening
and collaboration
• Establishment of guidelines for discussion
Vision for the Big Conversation
• All are welcome to the Big Conversation
• To plan and execute at least one, but not limited to one event per year
focused on race, diversity and privilege
• To reach the local community and beyond through exploration and
dialogue on key topics that affect our local area while building trust and
stronger community
Mission of The Big Conversation Partners in Dismantling Racism and Privilege in
Southern Maryland is to cultivate public understanding of the need to uproot
racism personally and in the systems that derive benefit and, therefore,
perpetuate racism and privilege.
Origin and Relationship with Middleham Parish
The Big Conversation was founded by Middleham and St. Peter’s Parish in
2011. The Parish provided the project with its administrative and financial
structure and authority, allowing the project to seek grants and other financial
support. This structure continues. These by-laws reflect this relationship and
